Demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of legislative requirements and teaching strategies that support participation and learning of students with disability.
For my major assessment task in Alternative Curricula B I decided to undertake a case study of Cabra Dominican College’s St Mary’s Unit. This piece is an in-depth discussion on the challenges of teaching students with intellectual disabilities, relevant legislature, and some proposed improvements that may be made. I learned a lot from this research, particularly through conversations with colleagues who had spent time working with the unit. I was then able to put this learning in to practice. During my second practicum my mentor teacher was particularly impressed with my ability to immediately identify students with intellectual disabilities and the way that I went out of my way to help these students. By building trusting relationships and being very encouraging and supportive I believe I made a significant contribution to the development of these students.
“He differentiated the curriculum by modifying a test given to students on goal driven programs. He also utilised teaching strategies to assist students with special needs including reading out information as a class and checking in regularly with them to provide assistance.”
