Immunisations - Persuasive piece
Your task is to imagine that you are an unborn child still in your mother's womb. Soon you will be born into a world full of microorganisms. Most of them you would never even know exist. Many of them will help you in various different ways. A small number of them pose serious risks to your health, and may even threaten your life. Even before you are born your parents need to make some very important decisions about protecting your health by safe-guarding you against many of the most harmful diseases that may threaten you throughout your life. They can do this by choosing to immunise you. Be aware that their decision is almost certainly going to be affected by the prevalence of unfounded claims about the supposed inflated risks of Autism and other side effects that are plastered all over the internet. These claims have no basis in fact and have no scientific evidence to support them, and it's your job to be the voice of reason. You need to complete a 500 word persuasive piece in the form of a letter to your parents compelling them to make the scientifically supported decision about having you immunised.
Some things you may want to consider are:
- What is immunisation?
- How do immunisations work?
- What immunisations are usually given to children in Australia?
- What are the diseases that these immunisations prevent and what effect could these have on you if you were to contract them?
- What scientific evidence is there to support the fact that immunisations work?
- What trends have been seen in the prevalence of serious diseases since the introduction of vaccines?
- What is herd immunity and what risk do unimmunised people pose to other people?
Before you start you should check out my page on writing a persuasive piece. Make sure you read it carefully and download the template to help you scaffold your assignment. All the information you need to write a good persuasive piece is there. You will be required to get this document checked by your teacher before you start writing up your assignment. You will also need to hand up this document as part of your assessment.
Make sure you are taking notes while you watch videos and that you keep track of all the resources you will reference including the date and time you access any online resources. Refer to your student diary for further details on correct referencing.
You may like to make use of the online referencing generator to assist you with your bibliography, which must contain at least 5 separate sources (not including Wikipedia!).
When you have completed your task you should submit it in hard copy with the task rubric and persuasion template. Also take the time to reflect on how you have performed by completing the online self-assessment.
I will be adding useful clips and links to websites below so make sure you check back regularly to see if there is any new and useful information.
