4.3 Manage challenging behaviour
Demonstrate knowledge of practical approaches to manage challenging behaviour.
During my first practicum a had a few students that presented some challenging behaviors. My typical approach when dealing with problem behaviors is outlined in my Student Teacher Handbook. One particular student offered plenty of challenges; this was common with all of his teachers. Regardless of what strategies I employed the situation often ended with the student being given the choice to either alter his behavior in order to participate in class and cease disrupting others, or to take himself to FOCUS, which he almost always did. Given more time I would like to think I could have instituted some more imaginative measures. However, given my short time at the school and his frequent absence from school (often due to suspension) I think I did everything reasonably possible to manage his behavior.
“The classes that Peter worked with in this placement happened to be classes that did not present many opportunities to demonstrate behavior management techniques.”
“Peter has had few classroom discipline issues due to his quite firm approach. He has ensured students understand his boundaries, and set up a classroom environment that reflects this. He has made himself aware of the school’s behaviour management strategies and also sought assistance and advice in how to manage certain students and their behaviours.”
