Stage 3: Ensuring a healthy water supply
The mechanical apparatus that your party brought to Mars to provide a potable supply of water is failing and you do not have the means to repair it, nor to build a replacement. Compounding this issue is the the ever increasing population of the Mars colony as your team members start to have families. With the terraforming team focussing on creating an hospitable atmosphere, management of the natural water supplies- which have been steadily increasing as a result of global warming- has been neglected. Some of the problems you and your team need to overcome in order to ensure useable water supplies are:
- High Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD)
- Eutrophication
- Thermal pollution
- Presence of relatively high concentrations of non-biodegradable wastes
- Bio-magnification of toxic trace elements
Research each of these problems and complete the log (below), which requires you to identify the causes of each of the problems above, possible solutions, and justification as to why your suggested solutions are appropriate. Remember, the more detail, especially in the Scientific Justification column, the better your grade. Don't forget that you need to contribute to the forum in order to get a satisfactory grade.
