4.5 Use ICT safely, responsibly and ethically
Demonstrate an understanding of the relevant issues and the strategies available to support the safe, responsible and ethical use of ICT in learning and teaching. Before implementing digital technologies in the classroom I consulted the Cyber-Safety: keeping children safe in a connected world- guidelines for schools and preschools from DECD. The schools I have taught at have also implemented restrictions on student access preventing- where possible- students accessing inappropriate material.
When using any ICT for teaching I would always explore the technology fully before making it available to my students. This is important for two reasons. Firstly, it is important that you can immediately assist students with any problems they have without wasting time mucking around trying to figure it out during class time. I have seen this lead to disengagement and behavioral issues. Second, and most importantly, it is of the utmost importance that the content is age appropriate and relevant to the learning outcomes.
As with any activity in the classroom it is supremely important that the students have a clear understanding of the rules and what is expected of them. All of my students had agreed to a Network & Internet Acceptable use agreement and were expected to act in accordance with this agreement. I was also bound by a similar agreement and at all times acted in accordance with this document.
