4.4 Maintain student safety
Describe strategies that support students’ well-being and safety working within school and/or system, curriculum and legislative requirements
I am always working towards finding a balance between caring for and challenging my students. In order to do this I promote a climate of caring and trust. To me, a feeling of safety and security for students in the classroom is born out of established rules and routines, and clear expectations. Consistency is the key.
On a more practical level, there can be serious safety considerations during science practicals. In order to minimize risk to myself and my students I underwent a full induction covering all aspects of safety in the science areas, which was conducted by the school’s Lab Assistant and OHS&W Coordinator. I also completed a risk assessment prior to engaging in any laboratory activities.
“He did employ strategies to successfully move students into the classroom and begin the lesson in a timely and orderly fashion and did not begin teaching until students were attentive. During science practicals, Peter explained his expectations clearly and consequently the students carried out the experiments safely and accurately.”
